Western Pacific Sedimentology Meeting (WPSM-3)
Oct. 16-17, 2020, Shanghai
First Circular
Theme: Sailing sands between the highest and the deepest
1. Aims and Scope of Meeting
The Western Pacific, fringed with a series of convergent plate boundaries with
frequent earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and typhoons, is prone to geohazards
associated with sedimentary processes. Intense surface erosion, rapid sediment
transport, and spasmodic deposition are common features in this dynamic region
where various types of active tectonic basins and natural resources are abundant. The
strong interaction between tectonics, sedimentation, oceanographic processes and
climates is of scientific importance for not only the Western Pacific areas but also the
active plate margins worldwide. This meeting aims to bring researchers from, but not
limited to, Western Pacific region together to provide opportunities for
multidisciplinary discussions among interested scientists, including sedimentologists,
stratigraphers, paleontologists, oceanographers, paleoceanographers, natural-resource
explorationists, flow modelers and engineers, to promote a holistic understanding of
sedimentary processes acting on the active plate boundary zones”.
We welcome also participants outside the Western Pacific region and topics
covering areas other than in the Western Pacific region.
